Safety Compliance Specialist

Wahl Clipper Corporation, a global manufacturer of branded Consumer and Professional products, has an exciting opportunity for a team-oriented individual to fill the role of Safety Compliance Specialist at our headquarters in Sterling, Illinois.

This position is responsible to assist the Safety Compliance Engineer/Manger and ensure products are designed/manufactured to comply with appropriate safety and efficiency regulations for each country where Wahl products are sold. This role also ensures that new and existing products are submitted to the appropriate approval agency in a timely fashion and approval updates are obtained before certifications expire. Works with the test agency to clear any compliance challenges that may arise during the approval process. This position reports directly to the Safety Compliance Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works to maintain current knowledge of country approval regulations, process and requirements. This includes both domestic and international markets as assigned.
  • Assists the Safety Compliance Manager in obtaining and keeping current agency approvals on new and existing products.
  • Provides regulatory information for use during the design of new products and modifications to existing products. Gives guidance to the product development, marketing, sales, purchasing, and manufacturing engineering teams on product safety, EMC, and energy efficiency.
  • Works with agencies such as the California Energy Commission and Department of Energy to ensure products are compliant with required efficiency regulations. May conduct testing on CEC and DOE regulated products to verify compliance.
  • Prepares U.S. and International regulatory submissions and works with test agencies and/or distributors to obtain approval on new and modified products. Meets with inspectors from various test agencies during factory audits.
  • Reviews PCN's and ECN to verify if changes being made impact our products regarding safety, EMC, or efficiency compliance and work with the appropriate people to address any concerns or issues.
  • Works with our product transfer teams when needed to make sure affected products have appropriate approvals when they are being made or sold in a different country.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Submits products to appropriate test agencies for approval.
  • Reviews safety standard proposals to evaluate impact on our product.
  • Works with the Safety Compliance Engineer to ensure design changes and product modifications meet required approvals and submits changes to test agency if required.
  • Works with subsidiaries and distributors on regulatory approvals.
  • May test and evaluate products to verify compliance to CEC and DOE efficiency regulations.
  • Helps maintain internal library of current US and International regulations and company product certifications.
  • Handles a great multitude of documents and detailed information that needs to be communicated to engineers and test authorities in a clear precise manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associates degree in electrical technology, or related field. Or, no degree and 3-5 years of work experience in a technical position where exposed to safety compliance regulations and basic electrical knowledge has been learned and applied.
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate the requirements of safety and efficiency standards to engineers and management.
  • Knowledge of the certification processes and ability to interact and communicate with local and international certification authorities.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Able or willing to learn to read and interpret product blueprints and specifications.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Safety standards are continuously updated to keep up with technology. This position requires a person willing to always be in a state of learning and able to apply such learning to our products which are impacted by the updated standards.
