Safety Compliance Engineer

Wahl Clipper Corporation, a global manufacturer of branded Consumer and Professional products, has an exciting opportunity for a team-oriented individual to fill the role of Safety Compliance Engineer at our Global Headquarters in Sterling, Illinois.

This position is responsible for ensuring products are designed/manufactured within government regulations and obtain the necessary approvals from proper agencies and investigates and assists on any electrical product safety claims.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Stays current with all major country approval requirements, including but not limited to US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan, South America, South Africa, India, China, Taiwan, Korea, and Australia.
• Serves as an approval expert for the plant regarding new and existing products, must stay abreast of new approvals and governmental regulations facing our industry and work to meet multiple goals and deadlines.
• Manages safety approvals on new and existing products, provides regulatory information for use during the design of new products and modifications to existing products, keeps the approval listing current and meets with inspectors from agencies on approvals as necessary. Ensures all necessary documentation for internal and external sources are maintained and completed on a timely basis.
• Reviews safety claims from customers to determine if Wahl product caused the safety violation or if it was from improper use/mishandling or another source.
• Performs product inspections on units that have been returned in which a fire or injury to persons claim has been reported.
• Partners cross-functionally with legal, compliance, and our insurance carrier to provide required information regarding the product. May represent Wahl as as engineering expert in cases that go to trial.
• Answer safety related technical questions from consumers that sales and/or repair are unable to answer.
• Work with our subsidiaries to help and assist them with problems and issues that may arise with their product approvals.
• Manages governmental approval process, changes to drawings/products and keeping approval listings current and in the investigation of safety related product complaints.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Responsible for regulatory agency approvals.
• Ensures design, development and modifications of products will meet approvals.
• Handles technical side of safety related consumer complaints.
• Works with subsidiaries and distributors on regulatory approvals.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred.
• 3-5 years of work experience in a technical position where exposed to safety compliance regulations and basic electrical knowledge has been learned and applied.
• Ability to communicate cross-functionally internally with Legal, Compliance, Manufacturing, and Human Resources.
• Knowledge of the certification processes and ability to interact and communicate with local and international certification authorities.
• Experienced in Microsoft Office applications.
• Able or willing to learn to read and interpret product blueprints and specifications.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• Safety standards are continuously updated to keep up with technology. This position requires a person willing to always be in a state of learning and able to apply such learning to our products which are impacted by the updated standards.
