Materials Engineer - Tribology

Wahl Clipper Corporation, a global manufacturer of branded Consumer and Professional products, has an exciting opportunity for a team-oriented individual to fill the role of Materials Engineer - Tribology at our Headquarters in Sterling, Illinois.

This position is primarily responsible for the advancement of blade materials, lubricants, and processes to improve performance in hair cutting. This position improves our testing and characterization methods for materials/process selection and hair cutting tests, as well as relevant technology landscaping and scouting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Explores new materials that could eliminate lubrication, reduce heat, increase cutting performance and create additional benefits to end users such as reducing/eliminating guide combs, less/improved cleaning, etc.
• Scouts for related technologies and help us with networking with the experts in this area and translating the findings into how they can help us with our products or processes.
• Identifies characterizing and testing needs to characterize critical features and create and run test equipment as needed.
• Scouts and apply new lubricants and methods to reduce friction on our blades and other applications in our products.
• Grows into an innovation engineer who can understand end user needs, connect them with technology trends and work with a cross-functional team to idea and prototype new products and or processes.
• Implements innovated materials, technologies and ideas into our product design or manufacturing process.
• Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor

• Partners cross-functionally with the Sales and Marketing teams, Manufacturing, Sourcing, and New Product Development to ensure we are "One Wahl". Thinks systemically to ensure end-to-end business strategy alignment.
• Uses an innovative mind-set to continuously improve processes, ultimately resulting in increased customer satisfaction.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• MS/PhD in Metallurgy/Materials Engineering with a specialization in tribology.
• Hands-on experience with test equipment set-up and systematic experimentation.
• Experience with surface technologies and modification.
• Project Leadership and formal technical report writing and presentation.
• Experience with metal material microstructure, mechanical properties and its processing process.
• Exceptional root cause analysis, problem solving, and analytical skills in preferably both manufacturing and R&D environment.
• Familiarity with nano materials technology.
• Prefer experience with different wear materials including steels and ceramics.
