Customs Compliance Specialist

Wahl Clipper Corporation, a global manufacturer of branded Consumer and Professional products, has an exciting opportunity for a team-oriented individual to fill the role of Customs Compliance Specialist at our headquarters in Sterling, Illinois. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages Item Classification and Country of Origin Determination. Classifies products and materials according to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule. Determines and maintains Country of Origin.
  • Manages Customs Clearance Process by supporting customs clearance of shipments and providing required information for import and export documentation in accordance with customs regulations, laws, and/or procedures. Responds to US customs requests for information.
  • Audit entry packets and supplier compliance with customs regulations to ensure proper government importing requirements are met.
  • Audit existing HTS code assignments to ensure accuracy.
  • Audit imported components and finished goods for Country of Origin marking to ensure compliance with government laws.
  • Provides training on import and export compliance topics. Trains import suppliers on documentation requirements.
  • Provides duty rates on goods to be imported based on tariff classification. Partners with internal departments and external partners.
  • Supports Free Trade Agreements processes and procedures through research and communicates free trade agreement information to obtain duty savings. Supports renewal of Free Trade Agreements yearly and as needed by performing bill of material analysis to determine qualification in FTA.
  • Audit duty drawback data for completeness and accuracy prior to submittal into drawback program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Incorporate all regulations into the day-to-day operations and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Review pending shipment documentation to ensure compliance.
  • Oversees audit programs.
  • Develop and maintain relevant internal procedures and conduct import and export training programs.
  • Liaison with all requestors to insure procedures are followed and documentation is correct upon submission.
  • Stay abreast on customs laws and regulations changes by participating in continuing education.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience. (In lieu of a degree, an additional 3 years of experience is acceptable)
    • 2+ years of experience in Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) assignment; OR
    • 2+ years of experience working customs operations, including classification, valuation, and Free Trade Agreements
  • Proven knowledge of US Customs regulations and HTSUS classification
  • Proven knowledge of international shipping documentation, customs clearance, and freight forwarding
  • Strong attention to details and proficient record-keeping and database maintenance skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Ability to research, interpret, and apply information
  • International Supply Chain experience preferred
  • US Customs Brokers License preferred or obtainment within 18 months
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed
