The Director of Engineering is responsible for ensuring that key projects and engineering duties are fulfilled. Responsible for product designs as related to production released projects including design enhancements, cost reductions, and ongoing production support. Assignments are broad in scope and highly complex requiring creativity, initiative, judgment and leadership with a broad understanding of a wide range of engineering principles and manufacturing and assembly processes. May be assigned to special projects within Sterling, IL or organization-wide focus that address broader issues outside of engineering.


  • Model the One Wahl strategy and Wahl Way concepts in every aspect of their job.
  • Participate in the implementation of the Wahl Operating System and teach/coach the tools and methods specifically to the Engineering team.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and coaching to Engineering team and all direct reports to maintain an engaged and productive workforce.
  • Oversee the design, specifications, development and manufacturability of our products through stable high-volume mass production.
    • Identify opportunities or implement changes to improve products or reduce costs using knowledge of fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment, assembly methods, quality control standards, product design, and materials.
    • Determine root causes of failures using statistical methods and recommend changes in designs, tolerances, or processing methods.
    • Assist with the purchase of equipment, tools, dies, molds, fixtures, and materials to meet product quality and manufacturing capacity.
    • Support new product development in all stages by providing resources for completing required deliverables and providing technical guidance.
    • Work with cross-functional teams including sales, marketing, sourcing, new product development team, R&D team and the operations team to identify and quickly execute on New Business Opportunities that will drive profitable growth.
    • Set goals to the team and individuals which align with the company's overall strategic objectives and manage the execution of goals.
  • Expand the company's technical knowledge and engineering capabilities by developing staff and recruiting technical talent in support of technology and product development objectives.
  • Initiate and implement continual process improvement activities through Kaizen events and Lean Manufacturing designed to reduce cost, scrap & downtime and improve quality, productivity and profitability.
  • Prepares and submits reports to Management on progress and status of projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Master's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of industry engineering experience, with at least 5+ years in technical staff management experience.
  • Great project management skills, PMP certification preferred.
  • Excellent understanding on part design and manufacturing processes for plastic parts, stamped and machined metal parts and assembly.
  • Mastery level skills for leading teams including hiring, setting expectations, providing coaching and effective feedback.
  • Key competencies include critical decision making, strategic thinking and high-level analytical skills.
